Miles of Bad Road © Bob Mullany 6-28-2007
They covered it closely in all of the papers
They all had opinions but no one knew much
Val looked good in the pictures from high school they published
But miles of bad road had all left their touch
It was luridly tragic but strangely exciting
For a moment in time they were media stars
Survivors were left their own interpretations
As they picked up and moved on and lived with the scars
They’d married young when she dropped out of high school
A baby was born with her daddy's blue eyes
He worked at the mill on the three to eleven
One night he left early and found a surprise
Tim was a guy she had dated in high school
Before she met John and got swept off her feet
Then evenings got lonely and some things just happen
What happened next I don’t care to repeat
They covered it closely in all of the papers
Not much like this happens in this kind of town
Now one family visits a loved one in prison
And two families’ loved ones lie under the ground
"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets."
