White Goddess

White Goddess © 1976 Bob Mullany

I was up all night
praying for a revelation
The moon was pearly white
And perfect for illumination
Still l waited 'til the dawn
And the night went on and on
I've learned that she's got her own inclinations

Sometimes she comes,
Sometimes she won't,
Sometimes she'll tease me
But once in a while,
She comes with a smile,
And gives me all I needed just to please me

I was out on the road
On my way to a destination
I was singing along
To a song on my favorite station
She hopped in at a light
And said, "You can be with me tonight,
You know the real thing's always better than an imitation."

Sometimes she comes,
Sometimes she won't,
Sometimes she'll tease me
But once in a while,
She comes with a smile,
And gives me all I needed just to please me

  1. Tis death to mock a poet (because he has the power of great knowledge, and is the favourite of the Queen of Heaven, and so has supernatural powers)
Tis death to love a poet (because he is distracted by his affair with the goddess, and so makes a poor husband)
Tis death to be a poet (because he has made himself a sacrifice to the goddess)
