Listen to the Night

Listen to the Night © 9/20/1978 Bob Mullany

You just rolled in on a midnight bus
And you got yourself a room
And your kids cling to you anxiously
As the neon fights the gloom
You're all children lost in darkness
With real substance to your fears
You mutter every prayer you know
And you pull the blankets near

Listen to the night
It's got a heartbeat of its own
Reach out in the night
You don't have to be alone
There's angels in the night
And they'll be staying near
Soon there'll be the light
Because you finally faced your fear

Your mind is working overtime
Like a movie flashing by
How you'd never felt so terrified
And you can't help wonder why
You knew this raging animal
You saw your frightened kids
Now you pray for absolution
For the sinful thing you did

Listen to the night
It's got a heartbeat of its own
Reach out in the night
You don't have to be alone
There's angels in the night
And they'll be staying near
Soon there'll be the light
Because you finally faced your fear

You lie and wait for morning
But you'll hate to greet the dawn
As you try to weigh your choices
Against the chances that are gone
So you bought yourself a ticket
And you took yourself a ride
But you know they're gonna catch you
'Cause you know somebody died

Listen to the night
It's got a heartbeat of its own
Reach out in the night
You don't have to be alone
There's angels in the night
And they'll be staying near
Soon there'll be the light
And you can finally face your fear

  1. “Sexism is the foundation on which all tyranny is built. Every social form of hierarchy and abuse is modeled on male-over-female domination.”
