Letting Go

Letting Go

We were there to watch you breathing
in your cradle as you slept
We were there to catch you when
you stumbled after your first step
We were there to ease your fear
and hold you on a stormy night
We were there to laugh with you
as you discovered life’s delights

And it’s all been done before
And we’re always wanting more
A baby's world’s so full of doubt
There’s so many things to fret about
We’re so proud to see you grow
…But it’s so hard letting go…

We were there to walk you to the bus
on your first day of school
We were there to comfort you
those bigger kids can be so cruel
We were there with juice boxes
and cookies when the game was done
We were there to make up games
when life just didn’t seem much fun

And it’s all been done before
And we’re always wanting more
It seems life’s flying by so fast
We want to make the moments last
We’re so proud to see you grow
…But it’s so hard letting go…

We were there to help you
when your homework didn’t make much sense
We were there to take your pictures
when you dressed up for the dance
We were there to calm you
when you got into that accident
We smiled through the tears because
we knew what graduation meant

And it’s all been done before
And we’re always wanting more
Now’s the time to close the door
On the child that you were before
We’re so proud to see you grow
…But it’s so hard letting go…

Bridge:
Now you’re graduating college,
Now you’re moving to another state,
Now you’re getting a promotion
From the sounds of it you’re doing great,
Now you’re saying that you found someone,
We're glad to hear you’re not alone,
Now you say you’re getting married
And planning children of your own…

And its all been done before
And we’re always wanting more
The wheel of life’s about to turn
And soon enough you’re going to learn
You’ll be so proud to see them grow
…But it’s so hard letting go…
