I Wish I Could Believe

I Wish I Could Believe © 5-20-2007 Bob Mullany

It’s plain you believe every word you’ve been saying
The way you conceive it, your singing is praying
Where you open your heart and you say what you needed to say
Do you really believe that redemption is found
In embracing your faith like you do ?
I wish I could believe, I wish I could believe,
I wish I could believe like you

Some churches embrace you and kill you with kindness
But faith unexamined can be willful blindness
Such blindness is evil and needs to be driven away
If faith can stand up to the clear light of reason
I might be a believer like you
I wish I could believe, I wish I could believe,
I wish I could believe it too

We all make our choices 'bout loving and giving
It’s clear in your voice there’s been pain in the living
But you turn it to beauty, then you bravely give it away
Do you need to believe that the power and the glory
of a savior is certainly true ?
I wish I could believe, I wish I could believe,
I wish I could believe like you

I love how you raise up your hands while you’re playing
Like a blessing, but do you feel doubt when you’re praying ?
If God holds the answers She sure doesn’t give them away
Am I touched by the devil, am I really that evil,
or just one of a cynical few ?
Still, I wish you’ll find bliss and redemption in this life
and forever when this life is through
I wish I could believe, I wish I could believe,
I wish I could believe it's true
I wish I could believe, I wish I could believe,
I wish I could believe like you
