Everybody Knows

She's unconsciously beautiful, a fragile young flower
When her young life is shattered in a single dark hour
She opens her heart to a trusted new friend
Then he savagely shows her how friendship can end
He robs her innocence, then mocks her trust
As her body is ravished, her spirit is crushed.

She seeks redemption, but can she be saved ?
It’s like he buried her soul in some shallow grave
down some dusty, old, back road
- and everybody knows...

Now, all of God’s children have some secret sins
That, at most, they would share with their closest of friends
But small towns spread secrets like hot, dusty winds,
No one can escape them, they just keep blowing in
So go the whispers giving evil her name,
And true evil runs free as the victim is blamed

She seeks redemption, but can she be saved ?
It’s like he buried her soul in some shallow grave
down some dusty, old, back road
- and everybody knows...

Have you ever seen predators play with their prey ?
Now imagine the torment she suffers each day,
Each day, she must face him at the scene of the crime,
While the depth of her sins is embellished with time.
No, there's no scarlet letter, it's more subtle, instead,
But when fools choose to judge you, your virtue's still dead

She seeks redemption, but can she be saved ?
It's like he buried her soul in some shallow grave
down some dusty, old back road
- and everybody knows...

Come, all you good Christians, and take up your stones,
And exact your cruel vengeance on her delicate bones,
Come pray for redemption, come pray for success,
Come pray for your neighbors, so they’ll all be blessed,
Come pray for yourself, your family, and friends,
But save a curse for that underaged slut and her sins

She seeks redemption, but can she be saved ?
It’s like he buried her soul in some shallow grave
down some dusty, old, back road,
- and everybody knows...

"Have you heard the latest, you won't believe this,
Some eighth grader died after slashing her wrists
It's sad, but the kids say they're not that surprised
She'd been sleeping around with all of the guys
Her folks are good Christians, it must kill them to know
She's forever condemned to where sinners all go
- and everybody knows"

She sought redemption, but she can't be saved
Now her body's been buried in a freshly dug grave
where only her loved ones will go
- but everybody knows

  1. "The rumors would build around a girl, getting thicker and thicker, like a chrysalis. The girls would try to disassociate themselves from the stories but they would find they could not move out from under the rumor's influence."
