Casual Encounter

Casual Encounter © 7/18/78 Bob Mullany

It was just another casual encounter
The liquor worked well,
And it loosened our tongues
Conversation came easily
And was easily forgotten
But got awkward and stale
While the night was still young

Our defenses were down,
Two tired old fighters
We called it a draw,
Not a punch had been thrown
And though we both knew the odds
On an easy one nighter
It beat spending another
Cold night all alone

Play 'em if you got 'em
If you hit the bottom
Don't let it get you down
Chance is gettin' thinner
But maybe it's a winner
You've got to lay your money down
You've got to lay your money down

It was opening night
And we knew our parts well
We recited our lines
You seemed slightly bemused
We were put to the test
But it's so hard to tell
'Til you wake in the morning
And you read the reviews

Play 'em if you got 'em
If you hit the bottom
Don't let it get you down
Chances gettin' thinner
But maybe it's a winner
You've got to lay your money down
You've got to lay your money down
