Blaming God

Blaming God © 6-12-2007 Bob Mullany

The fatal physics of a crash
The Jaws of Life a grisly joke
Revolving lights reflect on glass
And on a crowd that barely spoke
“There but for the grace of God,”
Somebody whispered to a friend
The phrase struck me as rather odd
There they go blaming God again

Perhaps it was the will of God
Perhaps it was an accident
Some bad things happen every day
We pause and wonder what they meant
Perhaps some cosmic dice were tossed
And it’s their turn to take the fall
Perhaps God's will can't be discerned
Or he just wasn't there ar all.

Katrina’s such a pretty name
It won’t be used much any more
Except in stories of the storm
Of how they watched her come ashore
“There but for the grace of God,”
Survivors say, some lost a friend,
No one saw him there that day
But now they’re blaming him again

Perhaps it was the will of God
Perhaps they needed to repent
Some bad things happen every day
Could some of them be heaven sent ?
It could be karma, could be fate
It could be nothing much at all
Perhaps God's will can't be discerned
Or he just wasn't there at all.

September, 1963,
Kids arrive for Sunday school
No one heard the car approach
No one saw the bomb they threw
Four little girls were blown away
While surely in a state of grace
And in the presence of the Lord
Could they have found a safer place ?

Perhaps it was the will of God
A higher purpose to be served
Some bad things happen every day
And yet some seem so undeserved
Could be the politics of hate
- the Grand Wizard's grand cabal
Perhaps God’s will can’t be discerned
Or he just wasn't there at all
