Dark Goddess

That’s the story of love, love don’t  come cheap
It can be easy to find but it’s so hard to keep
You’ve got o watch out for trouble , ‘cause trouble don’t sleep

And that’s about the story of love

Bob Mullany- Dark Goddess

Another Sad Love Song

It was just another casual encounter
The liquor worked well and loosened our tongues
Conversation came easily but just as easily forgotten
But got colder and staler while the night was still young

They were seasoned old fighters
They called it a draw, not a punch had been thrown
We both knew the odds with an easy one-nigtter
It was better than spending the cold night alone

Then come lay your body down

Play them if you got ‘em, if you hit the bottom,
Don’t let it get you down
Let's go out go out for dinner, maybe it's a winner
Then come lay your body down
Come lay your body down come lay your body down

Fading Away

Fading Away    ©    5/12/2016 Bob Mullany for Nancy Mullany

Shadows are slowly extending
Darkness continues descending
We pray for a happy ending
At the end of the day

Fading away ,colors gone grey
Flowers that wilt
Fading away a little each day
And it sharpens the guilt
Fading away

Scenes from  some grainy old movies
Shot from the shadows still sooth me
But details get duller,
and frames are less focused each day

Fading away ,colors gone grey
Flowers that wilt
Fading away a little each day
And it sharpens the guilt
Fading away

Our only wish, by some sheer force of will
We could turn back the clock,
We could make time stand still
We could tell you we love you
And you’ll laugh  and say “Ditto”
We have hope, but life’s still the ultimate riddle
Each day is  a miracle with us in the middle

Fading away  ,colors gone grey
Flowers that wilt
Fading away a little each day
it sharpens the guilt
We’re fading away

Blaming God -Bob Mullany

Blaming God   ©  5/22/2016   Bob Mullany

The fatal physics of crash
The Jaws of Life a grisly joke
Revolving lights, broken glass
Reflect a crowd that barely spoke
“There but for the grace of God,”
somebody whispered to a friend
The phrase struck me as rather odd,
There they go blaming God again

Perhaps it was the will of God,
Perhaps it was an accident
Some bad things happen every day
We pause and ponder what they meant
Perhaps some cosmic dice were tossed
And it’s their turn to take the fall
Perhaps God’s will can’t be discerned
Or He just wasn’t there at all

Katrina’s such a pretty name
It won’t be used  much any more
Except in stories of the storm
Of how they watched her come ashore
“There but for the grace of God
Survivors said, some lost some friends
No one saw Him there that day
How can they lay the blame on Him ?

Perhaps it was the will of God,
Perhaps they needed to repent
Some bad things happen every day
Could  some of them be heaven  sent ?
It could be karma, it could be fate
And it’s their turn to take the fall
Perhaps God’s will can’t be discerned
Or He just wasn’t there at all

September 1963
A black Alabama  church
A bomb placed carefully
A mourning dove moaned from her perch
Four little girls were blown away
While surely in a state of grace
And in the presence of the the Lord
Could there have been a safer place ?

Perhaps it was the will of God
A higher purpose to be served
Some bad things happen every  day
And yet some seem so undeserved
Could be the politics of hate
The Grand Wizard's grand cabal
Perhaps God’s will can’t be discerned
Or He just wasn’t there all

Lie Wih Me Bob Mullany

Come and lie with me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of road
Near the crooked little creek
That runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to -God knows where, I don’t care anyway
Long as you will lie me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of the road
Near the crooked little creek
that runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to God knows where I don’t care anyway

I loved the way you got so mad
And beat up on your deadbeat dad
You went away it made me sad
You’re on probation I’m so glad
(Time Off for good behavior)

But come and lie with me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of road
Near the crooked little creek
That runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to -God knows where, I don’t care anyway
Long as you will lie me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of the road
Near the crooked little creek
that runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to God knows where I don’t care anyway

I love you like your dog loves bones
your awesome strength, your muscle tone
The way you play your sousaphone
I ‘d kill for you and you alone
( You can even watch him suffer)

So, come and lie with me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of road
Near the crooked little creek
Tthat runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to -God knows where, I don’t care - anyway
Long as you will lie me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of the road
Near the crooked little creek
that runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to God knows where I don’t care anyway

I love you like a cow loves grass
I love it when you whup my ass
Tell me that I’m trailer trash
Just  like your dad I’ve got no class
(I think you really really like me)

Come and lie with me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of road
Near the crooked little creek
That runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to -God knows where, I don’t care anyway
Long as you will lie me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of the road
Near the crooked little creek
that runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to God knows where I don’t care anyway

I love it when you tie me up
You like to call me Buttercup
Then whip me ‘til I’m throwing up
Yeah, baby, I’m your Buttercup
(Buttercup's my safe word )

But come and lie with me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of road
Near the crooked little creek
That runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to -God knows where, I don’t care - anyway
Long as you will lie me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of the road
Near the crooked little creek
That runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to God knows where I don’t care anyway

I love to see you in the night
And watch your face by candlelight
You drip hot wax, my hair ignites
“My burning love's your favorite sight...
( Is it OK to shave my body ?)

Still come and lie with me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of road
Near the crooked little creek
That runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to -God knows where, I don’t care - anyway
Long as you will lie me
In the shade of the tree
By the side of the road
Near the crooked little creek
that runs ‘neath the bridge
That goes to God knows where I don’t care anyway

The Most Trustworthy Guy In The World

The Most Trustworthy Guy in the World © Bob Mullany 9/8/2006
You can see him approach in the Budweiser mirror
You feel resignation and a slight twinge of fear
He drank up his courage and put down his feet
And he’s hoping he’s someone you’re longing to meet
His timing seems perfect, the band’s song is done
He’s got his best line on the tip of his tongue
Then BANG !,he’s shot down in the blink of an eye
He doesn’t continue, he doesn’t ask why
His shoulders slump down and it’s clear that he’s beat
As he looks at the floor and slinks back to his seat

Fueled by illusion and liquor and lust
Another poor bastard has bitten the dust
Though it can be awkward, it’s certainly just
These days it’s not easy to know who to trust
If you want to discuss it, I’m here for you, girl
And I’m the most trustworthy guy in the world

I can see you’re well versed at deflecting requests
From bleary eyed guys who can’t see past your breasts
But hope springs eternal, and the night it is long
After five shots of vodka his mojo seems strong
So he sidles on up with a casual flair
Like a man of the world who’s already been there
Then BANG !, he’s shot down like a duck from the sky
Still he gets some applause from the rest of the guys
As he staggers on off to his barstool retreat
And his friends offer vodka to toast his defeat

Fueled by illusion and liquor and lust
Another poor bastard has bitten the dust
Though it can be awkward, it’s certainly just
These days it’s not easy to know who to trust
If you want to discuss it, I’m here for you, girl
And I’m the most trustworthy guy in the world

Many men dream of a beauty like you
And they hope for some magic will make it come true
Then there’s always that player who thinks it’s his right
To find a quick score and get lucky each night
He’s a golden tongued devil with sparkling eyes
Who seeks to entrap you with beautiful lies.
But BANG!, he’s shot down and he’ll never know why
You can even hear snickers from some the guys
Still he struts like a cock in his Calvin Klein shirt
As he exits in search of a new place to flirt

Fueled by illusion and liquor and lust
Another poor bastard has bitten the dust
Though it can be awkward, it’s certainly just
These days it’s not easy to know who to trust
If you want to discuss it, I’m here for you, girl
And I’m the most trustworthy guy in the world

You say this guy seems honest and shy and sincere
Though his judgment is clouded with a half dozen beers
Still, he’s very disarming, and charming, and bright
But question his motives, you need to be right
There’s just one more option I’d like to suggest
I have my own portable polygraph test
We can hook him up here, and we’ll give him a shot
And we’ll know right away if he’s lying or not
Then BANG!, he’ll be shocked with a terrible jolt
From my tazer that zaps him with thousands of volts

Fueled by illusion and liquor and lust
Another poor bastard has bitten the dust
It seems pretty drastic, but it’s only just
I may be the last guy in the world you can trust
You don’t need to thank me, I’m here for you, girl
And I’m the most trustworthy guy in the world

I Just Haven't Got The Strength to Carry On

I Haven't Got the Strength     7/3/2009  Bob Mullany

Twenty years and more now I been workin’ for the man
I take it easy now and then, I'm sure you understand
Boss say, " You may think you're smart,
        but I'm a little smarter.
I'll be leavin' early, stay and work a little harder"

I just haven't got the strength
No, I just haven't got the strength
God knows I haven't got the strength to carry on...

I called to tell my girl," I gotta work a little late"
She said, "I don't mind since I already have a date
Get a clue, I'm through with you, you can say you've been retired
I'm sleeping with your boss, and by the way, he says you're fired !"

I just haven't got the strength
No, I just haven't got the strength
God knows I haven't got the strength to carry on...

I went to see my priest and told him all about my troubles
He winked at me, said, "Son, you see, I hate to burst your bubble,
I feel so bad, you lost your job, and your old lady too
But I been tapping that for years, God knows I'll miss her more than you ! "

I just haven't got the strength
No, I just haven't got the strength
God knows I haven't got the strength to carry on...

I went down to the hospital to visit my physician

He did some tests, said, "Get some rest, then call up the mortician""That can't be, it can't be me, I''m an oldie, but a goodie,
Though sometimes when the pressure's on
I can't quite get a woodie"

I just haven't got the strength
No, I just haven't got the strength
God knows I haven't got the strength to carry on...

Just Like Lovers Do

Just Like Lovers Do    ©  5/21/2012   Bob Mullany

Beyond the shadows of the castle towers
We pick sweet berries and some wildflowers
We talk of everything for endless hours
Just like lovers do

You sing songs that bring the gods to tears
Some sad reflections in a house of mirrors
Where you sought rainbows but they disappeared
Just like lovers do

We can be the ones just like lovers do
That cultivate the gardens where love's seeds can be renewed
We pursue a destiny that rarely can come true
Just like lovers do

We have our moments but our bonds stay strong
Secure in knowing where our hearts belong
Find happy endings to some sad old songs
Just like lovers do

Our love is timeless, like the ancient tales
As we face challenge on the grandest scale
And reach for glory where the heroes fail
Just like lovers do

We can be the ones just like lovers do
That touch the hearts of dragons and survive the witch's brew
We'll fulfill a destiny that really can come true
That's what lovers do

Lilac Trees

Lilacs     - Bob Mullany  7-1-2012

The sweetest scent you’ll ever know
Is when the purple lilacs bloom
A fortnight then they fade  away
The scent is gone, the blossoms doomed

Rebecca Lee, Rebecca Lee
I’m off to see what I  can see
I’ll return when lilacs bloom
Then I’ll ask you to marry me

From the mountains of the north
I rode the Hudson to the sea
The churning waters made me ill
A seaman’s life was not for me

A banker’s suit won’t suit me well
A banker I will never be
They prey upon the common man
That’s not the kind  of man I’ll be

Rebecca Lee, Rebecca Lee
These cities aren’t the life for me
The Adirondacks call me home
To forests  and sweet lilac trees

My road is long but I push on
I know my journey wears on you
I’ll see you soon when lilacs bloom
Their scent will point the way to you

I yearn to  see Rebecca Lee
But first I visit  mother’s home
As  one who never travelled far
She’s loves to hear of where I roamed

Mother  frowned when I declared
I’m off to see Rebecca Lee
She said, “son, life can change so quick
Like blooms upon the  lilac tree

You’ve been away a longish time
Rebecca’s lovely as can be
Many a suitor came around
Soon one will wed Rebecca Lee”

Rebecca Lee, Rebecca Lee,
I was so blind I failed to see
My quest’s a dream that’s mine alone
Your own dreams had no room for me

Here’s to love that might have been
To love now that will never be
I felt the need to see the world
And so I lost Rebecca Lee

Many a man has gone away
Far beyond familiar trees
Many more build a life at home
and live their life quite happily

The choice is yours and then endures
But all have their own  choice, you see
Here’s the rub, you may be snubbed
Just like I lost Rebecca Lee

The years  have passed, I’ve settled down
I have my own fine family
We own our own small candle shop
Our favorite  scent is lilac trees

Folks come out to see old friends
As purple lilacs welcome spring
They shun the heat and hide away
For summer’s just around the bend
